Eastbourne Borough Football Club have this morning reluctantly accepted the resignation of Billy Wood as Women’s First Team Manager.

That comes after Wood has decided to accept an opportunity in the men’s game.

Wood oversaw a dramatic change in form since taking over in September 2023, winning eight league games in a row as the Sports finished second in the Sussex County Women & Girls Football League Premier. Borough await to see if they have been accepted for promotion to the London & South East Regional Women’s League.

Wood brought up players from the Development Squad to give them their first taste of Women’s First Team football, and they didn’t let him down. With a blend of youth and experience, only league champions Saltdean United Development had beaten the Sports in 90 minutes since he took over.

The Sports also reached the final of the Eastbourne FA Chairman’s Cup, where they took Newhaven – champions of the step above – to penalties before unfortunately losing 4-2 after the match finished 3-3 at ninety minutes.

Matt Grainger will take over the managerial role on an interim basis whilst the club search for Wood’s successor.

We would like to thank Billy for all of his hard work at Priory Lane and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
