Eastbourne Borough FC’s FA Cup journey came to an unfortunate end as they fell 1-0 to National League side Boreham Wood FC in the second qualifying round at The ReachTV Stadium. Despite a valiant effort and plenty of chances throughout the match, Borough couldn’t break through, while a second-half strike from Dixon sealed their fate.

The game began with Boreham Wood pressing early, creating a chance from a corner in the 4th minute that saw a header go wide. However, it was Borough who crafted the first big moment of the match in the 10th minute. Pavey lined up a free kick just outside the box, hitting it hard and on target, but it was comfortably saved by the Boreham Wood keeper. Boreham Wood continued to threaten, but Holter was in inspired form, making a series of crucial saves to keep the visitors at bay.

In the 22nd minute, Borough almost took the lead in spectacular fashion. Williams spotted Boreham Wood keeper Ashmore off his line and unleashed a quick free kick from just outside his own half. The ball soared over Ashmore but agonisingly struck the crossbar. It was a rare chance in a first half that saw Boreham Wood create multiple opportunities, but Borough defended resolutely, with Holter denying both Sousa and Marsh with smart saves.

The second half began with Boreham Wood increasing their pressure. Holter was again called into action, coming out to punch clear a dangerous cross in the 56th minute before Diarra cleared the follow-up. Despite Eastbourne’s defensive efforts, Boreham Wood eventually found the breakthrough in the 70th minute. Dixon was played in down Borough’s right, cutting onto his right foot and placing a shot into the bottom corner, leaving Holter with no chance.

Borough responded by pushing forward, with Pitblado, Ligendza, and Johnson entering the fray as manager Adam Murray looked to add firepower. A late chance in the 90th+3 minute saw Ligendza fire narrowly wide after Pavey had laid the ball off, but it wasn’t to be for Eastbourne. Boreham Wood could have doubled their lead, but Holter remained sharp, making another critical save before Sousa missed a one-on-one in stoppage time.

Despite the loss, the effort and heart shown by Eastbourne Borough cannot be understated. The squad battled, with Holter and the defense standing strong for large parts of the game. The club also extends a heartfelt thanks to the supporters who filled the stands and gave their backing throughout the match.
