Eastbourne Borough FC emerged victorious with a 2-1 comeback win over Boreham Wood at The ReachTV Stadium, showing resilience and determination to overturn a first-half deficit. Goals from Alexander and Ballard-McBride in the second half clinched the victory, with Borough putting in a spirited performance that thrilled the home crowd.
The match started with both teams making early forays forward, with Borough nearly breaking the deadlock in the 4th minute. A long free kick from Bird found Diarra, who headed it on for Carter to set up Klass in front of goal, but Boreham Wood’s Ashmore was quick to gather. Borough continued to pressure the visitors, with Bamba and C. Clarke orchestrating several promising attacks, and Alexander constantly looking for opportunities up front.
However, it was Boreham Wood who struck first. In the 39th minute, a lofted ball over the Borough defence forced Wright to come out, but he was unable to reach it ahead of the attacker, conceding a penalty. Sousa stepped up and fired the spot-kick past Wright, putting Boreham Wood ahead just before the break. Borough fought hard to respond, with Bamba creating a late first-half chance, but Ashmore’s quick reflexes denied him.
Borough regrouped in the second half with fresh energy, thanks to the introduction of Johnson and Ballard-McBride. Their efforts were rewarded in the 74th minute when Odusanya delivered a long free kick into the box. Diarra rose high to flick it onto Alexander, who deftly redirected it past Ashmore, bringing the score level at 1-1. This equaliser ignited the home side, and the momentum shifted as Borough pressed for a winner.
The breakthrough came in the 84th minute, thanks to a superb solo run by Sesay, who won the ball deep in Borough’s half and drove forward with pace. Sesay found Ballard-McBride with a well-placed pass, allowing him to cut onto his left foot, beat two defenders, and send a powerful shot into the top left corner to make it 2-1. Boreham Wood tried to rally late on, but Borough’s defence held firm, with Diarra making a crucial clearance to preserve the lead.
The win marked an impressive performance from Eastbourne Borough, whose determination to fight back after going behind showcased their resilience. A special thanks to the 1,001 supporters in attendance, whose support helped drive the team to victory.
