Eastbourne Borough Women progressed to the Third Round of the Combined Counties Midweek Cup after a resounding 4-1 win over Selsey Women at ReachTV Stadium.
The Sports started well and took a deserved 3-0 lead into the half-time interval against a side playing two levels higher.
Kellie Larkin then added a fourth goal in superb style before the visitors grabbed a consolation with virtually the last kick of the game.
The win makes it eight straight wins now for Chris Day’s side, who take on higher league opposition again on Sunday when they face Welling United in a friendly at ReachTV Stadium.
The Sports started on the front foot against their Southern Regional Women’s Football League Premier Division opponents. Phoebe Cram played a ball through to Beckie Simmons who broke through on goal, but had her effort well saved by Millie Delamont.
Borough then broke the deadlock eight minutes in. A spell of one touch passing saw Nicole Baitup find Lola Dulake on the left hand side, and she surged forwards before cutting inside and firing beyond the keeper from the edge of the area.
The lead was doubled just four minutes later when Charlotte Gurr drilled a low cross into Simmons, who had her effort blocked before the ball fell to Baitup, and she fired her first time shot into the net from eight yards out.
Borough weren’t content with their two goal lead and continued to push forwards. Megan Griffiths had an effort crash against the crossbar, before Abbie Tucker forced Delamont into a good save.
On the half hour mark, Griffiths whipped in a cross from the left and picked out Larkin, who headed the ball back across goal to Simmons, but from close range she couldn’t get her effort on target.
The Sports duly added a third on 35 minutes. Larkin pinged a diagonal ball forward into the path of Griffiths, who broke forwards down the left before cutting in and from outside the area saw her strike pick out the top corner and give Delamont no chance.
Simmons was then denied by Delamont again just before the break, before Tucker and then Baitup missed chances to add a fourth shortly after half time.
The visitors looked to get back into the game in the second half, with Sophia Moule making a few solid saves before the hour mark.
Sarah Walford then played a ball through to Isabelle Childs who looked to break through, but good defending saw her be under pressure when getting her shot away and Moule saved comfortably.
And with seven minutes to go, Borough added a fourth. Izzy Payne had the ball on the edge of the area and she laid it back to Larkin, who tried her luck from range and her emphatic shot went beyond Delamont.
With the tie going into stoppage time, Selsey were to grab a consolation for their efforts when Nancy Sanderson rose highest to meet a free-kick forwards and head beyond Moule.
But that didn’t dampen Borough’s spirits, with a notable scalp as they progress to the Third Round.
