Tommy Widdrington will be hoping to celebrate Eastbourne Borough’s first league win at home as they welcome Chesham United to Connect Management Stadium.

Widdrington enjoyed a five-year spell at Priory Lane from 2012 to 2017, and managed almost 250 games in charge of The Sports.

He returned to the club after leaving Aldershot Town, and in his first game back oversaw The Sports upset the odds as they won 1-0 at in-form Maidenhead last weekend.

And although they left Maidstone empty handed in midweek, there would have been plenty of encouragement to take from Borough’s performance and style of play at Gallagher Stadium.

A lot has changed around the ground since Tommy’s last home game in charge – a 5-1 win over Wealdstone in April 2017 – and he will be looking to make Connect Management Stadium a fortress.

The Sports’ average attendance was just 540 back then, and Widdrington will be hoping a crowd of double that figure will be cheering his side on.

Chesham United stand in their way this afternoon, and the Buckinghamshire side will be looking to bounce back after losing against Worthing in midweek.

After finishing in mid-table in their first season at this level last term, they have made a good start this season – sitting in 11th spot, just three points off the top seven.

Starting the season with an impressive win at Maidenhead, the Generals have 17 points from their 13 games to date, and beat Torquay 1-0 at The Meadow last weekend.

You could be forgiven to forgetting about last season’s meetings between the two teams – a dull 0-0 in November followed a 1-1 draw between the two teams in Sussex – Nathan Minhas cancelling out Jayden Davis’ second half opener.

Under James Duncan and Michael Murray, they have recruited well in the summer and added experience of this league in players like Matt McClure and Giorgio Rasulo to join the likes of Ryan Upward and Minhas.

But after a few more training sessions this week, the Sports will be hoping to implement the way Widdrington wants his side to play – and continue their improvement as they look to move up the Enterprise National League South standings.
