After a hard fought win at home to Saltdean United Development on Thursday evening, Borough women travelled to Frimley Green on Sunday, full of confidence after a perfect start to the season, with 6 wins in all 6 games so far.
Chris Day had both Lola Dulake and Abbie Tucker unavailable, so brought Lily Ray and Phoebe Cram back into the starting line up.
Despite a sloping and bumpy pitch, The Sports soon found their passing rhythm, and it only took ten minutes for captain Kellie Larkin to open the scoring, after some excellent wide play from Megan Griffiths. Ten minutes later and Griffiths found herself on the scoresheet, with an excellent header from Charlotte Gurr’s corner.
Frimley only posed a threat on counter attacks, and did hit the crossbar with one long range effort, but otherwise it was all Borough, and indeed they made it 3-0 in the 21st minute, when a Molly Hill shot was followed in by Becky Simmons.
2 minutes later another molly Hill shot was saved by the Frimley keeper, who could only push it out into the path of Gurr, who made no mistake.
Again 2 minutes later it was pretty much game over as a flowing Borough move started by player of the game Cram was finished off in the box by Gurr for her second of the day.
A working injury to Izzy Payne saw in the introduction of Beth Creese on the left, with Griffiths shifting into midfield.
With a 5-0 lead at half time, Ruby Starkey came on for Lily Ray, and Frimley found a new energy, scoring 2 in quick succession from Borough errors at the back.
However Day shifted his system, replacing Griffiths with Elena Beck, and quickly Gurr completed her hat trick in the 75th minute with a trademark long range effort.
Molly Hill then got on the scoresheet in the 84th minute when following up Becky Simmons shot. Just before the end Cicely Holmes made her return from a long term injury, replacing the impressive Leonie Swaine.
Head Coach Chris Day said after the game: “It was always going to be a tricky game this one physically, after such a hard game on Thursday, and with the travel involved for some players, but I was super proud of how we coped with the pitch and fatigue. To hit a possession rate of 75% in this league is some going, and a credit to the work we put in on the training pitch.
“As I said to the players at the end, they are in a fantastic position going into Sunday’s FA Cup game, and even though we will be very much the underdogs, the pressure is all on Farnham as the home team”
