Eastbourne Borough will be looking to bounce back from a frustrating result in midweek when Weston-super-Mare make the long trip to East Sussex this afternoon.
The Sports will feel their performance deserved at least a point against Dagenham & Redbridge on Tuesday night, but it was the visitors who came from behind to snatch all three points at Connect Management Stadium.
Borough were the better side for majority of the 90 minutes, and deserved their half-time lead when Pemi Aderoju tucked home Josh Anifowose’s low cross.
But two goals from set-pieces proved to be the difference. Trent Rendall – once on loan at Borough from QPR – headed home a corner on the hour mark before Andy Carroll stooped low to direct his diving header into the far corner with eight minutes to go.
Another bitter pill to swallow would have been losing both Craig Eastmond and Jayden Davis to injury in the first half – and Tommy Widdrington will hope that those who have the opportunity in their place can grab it with both hands.
Such is the nature of the league table that for a period The Sports were as high as 18th on Tuesday night – but now find themselves down in 23rd ahead of today’s game.
You have to go back to 2018 for the last time Weston-super-Mare were victorious in Eastbourne – coming from behind to win 2-1.
And Scott Rogers’ side come into the game in good form – buoyed on by their FA Cup success.
The Seagulls have lost just three times in the league so far this campaign – although did lose 3-0 away at Hemel Hempstead on Tuesday night.
But last weekend saw Weston cause an upset after beating Aldershot Town after extra time at Optima Stadium.
Emlyn Lewis scored with just six minutes to go to send the tie to extra time after Kiban Rai’s opener – with James Waite scoring the decisive goal in the second half of extra time.
Their reward for that First Round win is an away tie at fellow National League South side Chelmsford City – and with a Third Round place up for grabs, there is certainly cause for excitement.
All three of Weston’s league defeats have come on the road – and Borough will be looking to make that four as they hunt for three points.
