Louis Britton’s free-kick deep into stoppage time saw Weston-super-Mare seal a smash-and-grab win at Eastbourne Borough.

In an even start to proceedings at Connect Management Stadium, it was Eastbourne who went close first when Kai Corbett had a low drive blocked, before he headed the follow-up just wide of the post.

Max Harris then did well to dive to his right and turn Corbett’s free-kick wide, before Arthur Grout had an effort blocked by a stern Weston defence.

The visitors’ first sight of goal came on 35 minutes – with Jason Dodd’s low effort held by Ryan Sandford.

Borough had been the better team in the first half, but fell behind within two minutes of the restart when Luke Coulson’s free-kick into the area wasn’t cleared and Sam Avery eventually bundled in from close range.

Tommy Widdrington’s side searched for a response, and were given a penalty after the hour mark when Pemi Aderoju was fouled inside the area. Aderoju stepped up, but had his shot saved by Harris, with Josh Anifowose firing the rebound over.

Borough continued to dominate, and got their reward with just three minutes left. Isaac Pitblado pulled the ball back from the byline to Corbett just inside the area, and his first time strike found the far corner.

But there was a sting in the tail. Weston won a free-kick 25 yards out deep into stoppage time and Britton’s strike found the bottom corner to snatch all three points.
